Invoking Blessings Upon the Prophet Muhammad and His Family

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad teaching people how to invoke blessings upon him and his family.

Ka’b b. 'Ujrah said: We said or the people said: Messenger of Allah, you have commanded us to invoke blessing on you and to salute you. As regards salutation we have already learnt it. How should we invoke blessing? He said: Say: "O Allah, bless Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst bless Abraham and Abraham’s family. O Allah, grant favours to Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst grant favours to Abraham; Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of invoking blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad and his family. It is narrated by Kab b. 'Ujrah, who asked the Prophet how to invoke blessings upon him and his family, to which he replied with a prayer that was similar to one used for blessing Abraham and his family. This prayer is an example of how we should ask Allah for blessings on those we love, as it shows us that even if we don't know what words to use, Allah will understand our intentions if they are sincere. We can also learn from this hadith that it is important to show respect for those who have gone before us in faith, such as Abraham, by asking Allah for His mercy on them too. Furthermore, this hadith teaches us that when asking Allah for something or expressing gratitude towards Him, it is important to remember His greatness by praising Him at all times.
