Praying with Pebbles

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised not to remove pebbles while praying, and if it is necessary, do it only once.

Mu’aiqib reported the Prophet as saying ; Do not remove pebbles while you are praying; if you do it out of sheer necessity, do it only once to smooth the pebbles.
حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ يَحْيَى، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ مُعَيْقِيبٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ قَالَ ‏ "‏ لاَ تَمْسَحْ وَأَنْتَ تُصَلِّي فَإِنْ كُنْتَ لاَ بُدَّ فَاعِلاً فَوَاحِدَةً تَسْوِيَةَ الْحَصَى

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of our actions when we are in prayer. We should not be distracted by removing pebbles or anything else that may disrupt our concentration. If it is absolutely necessary to remove a pebble or something similar from the area where we are praying then we should do so only once and quickly so as not to disturb the prayer. This hadith also teaches us about being mindful of our environment and taking care of it even during prayer time.
