Sunan Abi Dawud 927 (Book 2, Hadith 538) #21219
Responding to Salutations During Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) responding to salutations while he was engaged in prayer.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: The Messenger of Allah went to Quba to offer prayer. Then the Ansar (the Helpers) came to him and gave him a salutation while he was engaged in prayer. I asked Bilal: How did you find the Messenger of Allah responding to them when they gave him a salutation while he was engaged in prayer. He replied: In this way, and Ja'far ibn Awn demonstrated by spreading his palm, and keeping its inner side below and its back side above.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respond to salutations with kindness & respect even while praying

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates an incident when the Prophet Muhammad PBUH was offering his prayers at Quba and the Ansar, or Helpers, greeted him. His companion Bilal asked how he responded and Ja'far ibn Awn demonstrated by spreading his palm with its inner side below and its back side above. This gesture is known as Taslim, which is a form of greeting in Islam that involves saying 'Assalamu Alaikum' or 'Peace be upon you'. It teaches us that even when we are engaged in prayer, we should still respond to salutations with kindness and respect. We should also remember that our actions speak louder than words; sometimes a simple gesture can be more meaningful than words alone.
