Sunan Abi Dawud 798 (Book 2, Hadith 408) #21089
Reciting Surahs in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite the Fatiha and two surahs in the first two rak’ahs of the noon prayer, and he would prolong the first rak’ah and shorten the second.

Abu Qatadah said: The apostle of Allah used to lead us in prayer and recite in the first two rak’ahs of the noon prayers Fatihat al-kitab and two surahs, and he would sometimes recite loud enough for us to hear the verse. He would prolong the first rak’ah of the noon prayer and shorten the second; and he did so in the morning prayer. Abu Dawud said: Musaddad did not mention the words fatihat al-kitab and surah.

QUICK LESSONS:
Take your time when reciting from Quran during prayers

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Abu Qatadah explains how Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to lead his companions in prayer. He would recite from the Quran, specifically Fatihat al-Kitab, which is also known as Al-Fatiha, and two other surahs during his prayers. He would also prolong his recitation of Al-Fatiha during the first rak'a of noon prayer while shortening it for the second one. This shows us that we should take our time when reciting from Quran during our prayers so that we can understand its meaning better. We should also strive to make our prayers meaningful by understanding what we are saying instead of just rushing through them without any thought or contemplation.
