Sunan Abi Dawud 792 (Book 2, Hadith 402) #21083
Seeking Refuge from Hell-Fire in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught a person how to pray and explained that we should ask for Paradise and seek refuge from Hell-Fire.

Narrated Some Companions of the Prophet: AbuSalih reported on the authority of some Companions of the Prophet : The Prophet said to a person: what do you say in prayer? He replied: I first recite tashahhud (supplication recited in sitting position), and then I say: O Allah, I ask Thee for Paradise, and I seek refuge in Thee from Hell-Fire, but I do not understand your sound and the sound of Mu'adh (what you say or he says in prayer). The Prophet said: We too go around it (paradise and Hell-fire).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of prayer in Islam. It is narrated by some companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that he asked a person what they said in prayer. The person replied that they recite tashahhud, which is a supplication recited while sitting, and then ask Allah for Paradise and seek refuge from Hell-Fire. The Prophet ﷺ then said that we too go around it, meaning both Paradise and Hell-Fire. This hadith teaches us to always remember Allah when praying by asking for His mercy and protection from His punishment. We should also strive to be among those who will enter Paradise by doing good deeds throughout our lives.
