Sunan Abi Dawud 757 (Book 2, Hadith 367) #21048
Holding Hands Above the Navel

SUMMARY: Ali (RA) was seen holding his left hand with his right hand above the navel.

Jarir ad-Dabbi reported: I saw Ali (Allah be pleased with him) catching hold of his left hand) by his right hand on the wrist above the navel. Abu Dawud said: Sa'id b. Jubair narrated the words: "above the navel". Abu Mijlaz reported the words: "below the navel". This has also been narrated by Abu Hurairah. But that is not strong.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive to restrain yourself from any kind of sin or bad deed .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a practice of Ali ibn Abi Talib RA where he was seen holding his left hand with his right hand above the navel. This practice is known as qabd al-yad which means to hold one's own hands in order to control oneself from doing something wrong or inappropriate. It is also a way of showing humility before Allah SWT by restraining oneself from any kind of sin or bad deed. The hadith also mentions that this practice has been narrated by several narrators such as Jarir ad-Dabbi, Sa'id b. Jubair, Abu Mijlaz and Abu Hurairah but it is not strong enough to be considered authentic according to some scholars.

This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to restrain ourselves from any kind of sin or bad deed by controlling our actions through qabd al-yad in order to show humility before Allah SWT and gain His pleasure in return for our good deeds.
