Sunan Abi Dawud 731 (Book 2, Hadith 341) #21022
How Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) Prayed

SUMMARY: The hadith describes the prayer of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and how he performed it.

'Amr al-Amiri said: I (once) attended the meeting of the companions of the Messenger of Allah. They began to discuss his prayer. Abu Humaid then narrated a part of the same tradition and said: When he bowed he clutched his knees with his palms, and he opened his fingers; then he bent his back without raising his upwards, and did not turn his face (on any side). When he sat at the end of two rak’ahs he sat on the sole of his left foot and raised the right, and after the fourth he placed his left hip on the ground and spread out both his feet one side.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the prayer of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and how he performed it. It is narrated by Amr al-Amiri and Abu Humaid who attended a meeting of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They discussed his prayer in detail, describing how when he bowed, he clutched his knees with his palms and opened his fingers; then bent his back without raising it upwards, and did not turn his face on any side. When he sat at the end of two rak’ahs, he sat on the sole of his left foot and raised the right one; after four rak’ahs, placed his left hip on the ground while spreading out both feet to one side. This hadith teaches us that we should follow in our prayers as closely as possible to what was done by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself so that we can gain maximum benefit from our prayers.
