Sunan Abi Dawud 720 (Book 2, Hadith 330) #21011
Maintaining Focus During Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of maintaining focus and concentration during prayer, and how to deal with distractions.

Abu al-Waddak said: A youth from the Quraish passed in front of Abu Sa’id al-Khudri who was praying. He repulsed him. He returned again. He then repulsed him for the third time. When he finished the prayer, he said: Nothing cuts off prayer; but the Messenger of Allah said: Repulse as much as you can, for he is just a devil. Abu Dawud said: If two traditions of the prophet conflict, the practice of the Companions after him should be taken into consideration.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of maintaining focus during prayer. It is narrated that a youth from the Quraish passed in front of Abu Sa’id al-Khudri while he was praying, and he repulsed him three times. When he finished his prayer, Abu al-Waddak said that nothing cuts off prayer except for a devil, which implies that it is important to stay focused on one's prayers in order to avoid being distracted by external factors. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us that we should repulse as much as we can when faced with distractions during our prayers so as not to be disturbed by them. This hadith also teaches us that if two traditions of the Prophet ﷺ conflict, then we should take into consideration the practice of his Companions after him in order to resolve any conflicts between them.
