Sunan Abi Dawud 704 (Book 2, Hadith 314) #20995
Praying with Awareness

SUMMARY: When praying, one should be aware of their surroundings and ensure that no distractions pass in front of them.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: Ikrimah reported on the authority of Ibn Abbas, saying: I think the Messenger of Allah said: When one of you prays without a sutrah, a dog, an ass, a pig, a Jew, a Magian, and a woman cut off his prayer, but it will suffice if they pass in front of him at a distance of over a stone's throw. Abu Dawud said: There is something about this tradition in my heart. I used to discuss it with Ibrahim and others. I did not find anyone who narrated it from Hisham and knew it. I did not know anyone who reported it from Hisham and knew it. I did not know anyone who related it from Hisham. I think the confusion is on the part of Ibn Abi Saminah that is, Muhammad b. Isma'il al-Basri, the freed slave of Banu Hisham. In this tradition the mention of words "a Magian" is rejected; the mention of the words "at a stone's throw" and "a pig" is rejected. Abu Dawud said: I did not hear this tradition except from Muhammad b. Isma'il b. Samurrah and I think he was mistaken because he used to narrate to us from his memory.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful and aware when praying ; Respect other people's religious practices ; Take care of your environment ; Find an appropriate place for your prayers ; Focus on worshipping God without external interferences during your prayers .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of being aware when praying. It is narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas that the Prophet Muhammad said that if someone prays without a sutrah, then a dog, an ass, a pig, a Jew, or a woman can cut off his prayer if they pass in front of him at less than a stone's throw away. This means that it is important to be mindful and aware when praying so as not to be distracted by anything around you. It also teaches us to respect other people's religious practices and not disturb them while they are worshipping God. Additionally it teaches us to take care of our environment and keep it clean from any animals or objects which may cause distraction during prayer time.

The hadith also emphasizes the importance of having an appropriate place for prayer where one can focus on their worship without any distractions or disturbances from outside sources such as animals or people passing by too close to them. This shows us how important it is for Muslims to find an appropriate place for their prayers so they can concentrate on worshipping God without any external interferences which could disrupt their concentration and focus on God’s words during prayer time.
