Sunan Abi Dawud 687 (Book 2, Hadith 297) #20978
Praying Towards a Lance

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to pray towards a lance when he went out for prayer on the day of Eid and during his journeys.

Ibn 'Umar said: When the Messenger of Allah would go out (for prayer) on the day of 'Id, he ordered to bring a lance, it was then setup in front of him and he would pray in its direction, and the people (stood) behind him. He used to do so during journey ; hence the rulers would take it (lance with them).

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic practices even if you don't have access to mosques or other places where you can perform your prayers; Be mindful and respectful; Share Islamic practices with others around you.

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was known to be an exemplary leader in all aspects of life. He taught us how to live our lives according to the teachings of Islam and how to practice our faith in the best way possible. One example is that when he would go out for prayer on the day of Eid or during his journeys he would order someone to bring a lance which was then setup in front of him and he would pray in its direction while people stood behind him. This shows us that even though we may not always have access to a mosque or other places where we can perform our prayers we should still make sure that we are praying towards something as it is important for Muslims to face one direction when they are praying. It also teaches us about being mindful of our surroundings and making sure that wherever we go we take with us some form of Islamic practice so that it can be shared with others around us.
