Sunan Abi Dawud 678 (Book 2, Hadith 288) #20969
The Best Rows for Men and Women

SUMMARY: The best row of men is the first and the best row of women is the last.

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah as saying: the best of the men’s row is the first and the worst of them is the last, but the best of the women’s rows is the last and the worst of them is the first.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive to do your best; Take up positions that will benefit you spiritually; Come together as a community and pray together; Be mindful of everyone’s needs even when leading prayers yourself; Respect each other's space during prayer .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teaches us that when we are in a congregation, it is important to be mindful of our position in the rows. For men, it is best to be at the front while for women, it is better to be at the back. This shows us that we should always strive to do our best and take up positions that will benefit us spiritually. It also teaches us about respect for each other as men should not take up positions in front of women if they can help it.

This hadith also encourages people to come together as a community and pray together which has many benefits such as strengthening ties between people, increasing faith, and providing spiritual guidance. It also serves as an example of how Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was mindful of everyone’s needs even when leading prayers himself.
