Sunan Abi Dawud 602 (Book 2, Hadith 212) #20893
Praying in Congruence with the Imam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught his followers to pray in the same manner as the Imam, whether it be standing or sitting.

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah: The Messenger of Allah rode a horse in Medina. It threw him off at the root of a date-palm. His foot was injured. We visited him to inquire about his illness. We found him praying sitting in the apartment of Aisha. We, therefore, stood, (praying) behind him. He kept silent. We again visited him to inquire about his illness. He offered the obligatory prayer sitting. We, therefore, stood (praying) behind him; he made a sign to us and we sat down. When he finished the prayer, he said: When the imam prays sitting, pray sitting; and when the imam prays standing, pray standing, and do not act as the people of Persia used to act with their chiefs (ie the people stood and they were sitting).

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow instructions of Imams during prayers

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Muslims should pray when they are in congregation. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was riding a horse and fell off, injuring his foot. When people came to visit him and saw him praying while sitting, they stood up behind him to pray as well. He made a sign for them to sit down and then explained that when the imam is praying while sitting, everyone should also sit; but if he stands up for prayer then everyone should stand too. This hadith teaches us that we must always follow what our imam does during prayer so that we can all be united in our worship of Allah SWT. It also teaches us not to act like people from Persia who used to stand while their chiefs were seated - this shows us that we must respect our leaders but not put them on a pedestal above ourselves.
