Sunan Abi Dawud 584 (Book 2, Hadith 194) #20875
Respect for Others and Knowledge of Sunnah

SUMMARY: Do not take someone's place of honor without their permission and if two people are equal in knowledge, the one with more knowledge of the Sunnah should be given precedence.

This tradition has been transmitted through a different chain by Abu Mas’ud This version has words ; "If they are equally versed in recitation, then the one who has most knowledge of the Sunnah ; if they are equal with regard to (the knowledge of) the Sunnah, then the earliest of them to emigrate (to medina)". He did not narrate the words; " The earliest of them in recitation". Abu Dawud said: Hajjaj b. Artat reported from Isma’il: Do not sit in the place of honour of anyone except with his permission.

QUICK LESSONS:
Ask permission before taking someone's place of honour; strive for excellence in your understanding of the sunna; show respect towards those with greater knowledge about the sunna than yourself.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us to respect others and to give precedence to those who have more knowledge about the sunnah. It is important that we do not take someone's place of honor without their permission as this would be disrespectful. We should also recognize those who have a greater understanding of the sunnah than ourselves and give them due respect for their knowledge. The hadith also encourages us to strive for excellence in our own understanding of the sunnah so that we can gain recognition from others as well as benefit from our own increased understanding.
