Sahih al-Bukhari 2172, 2173 (Book 34, Hadith 123) #2086
Selling Fruits According to Islamic Law

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade Muzabana, which is the selling of fresh fruit without measuring it for something by measure. He allowed the selling of fruits on trees after estimation when they are ripe.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The Prophet forbade Muzabana; and Muzabana is the selling of fresh fruit (without measuring it) for something by measure on the basis that if that thing turns to be more than the fruit, the increase would be for the seller of the fruit, and if it turns to be less, that would be of his lot. Narrated Ibn 'Umar from Zaid bin Thabit that the Prophet allowed the selling of the fruits on the trees after estimation (when they are ripe).

QUICK LESSONS:
Measure or estimate fruits before buying or selling them according to Islamic law

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the Islamic law regarding selling fruits. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forbade Muzabana, which is the selling of fresh fruit without measuring it for something by measure. If what was measured turns out to be more than the fruit, then that increase would be for the seller of the fruit and if it turns out to be less, then that would be his lot. However, he allowed for people to sell fruits on trees after estimation when they are ripe. This means that people can estimate how much a certain amount of fruit will cost before buying or selling them in order to ensure fairness in transactions between buyers and sellers.
