Sunan Abi Dawud 486 (Book 2, Hadith 96) #20777
Recognizing the Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man who asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who he was, and the Prophet responded to him.

Anas b. Malik reported : A man entered the mosque on camel and made it kneel down, and then tied his leg with rope. He then asked: Who among you is Muhammad? The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) was sitting leaning upon something among them. We said to him: This white (man) who is leaning. The man said: O son of 'Abd al-Muttalib. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said; I already responded to you. The man (again) said: O Muhammad. I am asking you. The narrator then narrated the rest of the tradition.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect authority figures and use proper address for others

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man entering a mosque on his camel and asking who among them was Muhammad. The people pointed out that it was the white man leaning against something in their midst. The man then addressed him as "O son of 'Abd al-Muttalib". To this address, the Prophet replied that he had already responded to him. This shows us how important it is to recognize and respect those in authority over us such as our parents or teachers. It also teaches us that we should always be respectful when addressing someone else by their proper title or name instead of using nicknames or terms of endearment without permission from them first.
