Rubbing a Mat with Foot After Spitting on It

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) rubbing a mat with his foot after spitting on it.

Narrated Wathilah ibn al-Asqa': AbuSa'id said: I saw Wathilah ibn al-Asqa' in the mosque of Damascus. He spat at the mat and then rubbed it with his foot. He was asked: Why did you do so? He said: Because I saw the Messenger of Allah doing so.
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْفَرَجُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ رَأَيْتُ وَاثِلَةَ بْنَ الأَسْقَعِ فِي مَسْجِدِ دِمَشْقَ بَصَقَ عَلَى الْبُورِيِّ ثُمَّ مَسَحَهُ بِرِجْلِهِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ لِمَ فَعَلْتَ هَذَا قَالَ لأَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَفْعَلُهُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates an incident in which the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was seen in the mosque of Damascus. He spat at a mat and then rubbed it with his foot. When asked why he did so, he replied that he saw the Messenger of Allah doing so. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our actions and to follow in the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad as much as possible, even if we do not understand why something is done. We should also strive to keep our mosques clean and tidy, as this was one of the teachings of Prophet Muhammad himself.
