Sunan Abi Dawud 452 (Book 2, Hadith 62) #20743
The Evolution of the Pillars in the Prophet's Mosque

SUMMARY: The pillars of the Prophet's mosque were made of palm tree trunks and twigs, but they decayed over time and had to be replaced with bricks.

Ibn 'Umar reported: The pillars of the mosque of the Prophet during the life time of the Messenger of Allah were made of the trunks of the palm-tree; they covered from the above by twigs of the palm-tree; they decayed during the caliphate of Abu Bakr. He built it afresh with trunks and twigs of the palm-tree. But they again decayed during the caliphate of 'Uthman. He, therefore, built it with bricks. That survives until today.

QUICK LESSONS:
Maintain traditions while adapting to new circumstances when necessary .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the pillars in the Prophet's mosque changed over time. During the lifetime of Muhammad, these pillars were made from trunks and twigs from a palm tree. However, during Abu Bakr's caliphate, they decayed and he had to rebuild them with trunks and twigs again. But then during Uthman's caliphate, they decayed again so he built them with bricks instead which still stands today. This teaches us that things change over time but we should always strive to maintain our traditions as much as possible while adapting to new circumstances when necessary. It also shows us that even though something may not last forever, it can still have an impact on future generations if it is done right.
