Sunan Abi Dawud 444 (Book 2, Hadith 54) #20735
The Importance of Prayer in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) overslept and missed the morning prayer, but he still led the people in prayer when he woke up.

Narrated Amr ibn Umayyah ad-Damri: We were in the company of the Messenger of Allah during one of his journeys. He overslept abandoning the morning prayer until the sun had arisen. The Messenger of Allah awoke and said: Go away from this place. He then commanded Bilal to call for prayer. He called for prayer. They (the people) performed ablution and offered two rak'ahs of the morning prayer (sunnah prayer). He then commanded Bilal (to utter the iqamah, ie to summon the people to attend the prayer). He announced the prayer (ie uttered the iqamah) and he led them in the morning prayer.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of prayer in Islam. It was narrated by Amr ibn Umayyah ad-Damri, who was with the Prophet Muhammad during one of his journeys. On this journey, the Prophet overslept and missed his morning prayer. However, when he awoke, he still commanded Bilal to call for prayer and lead them in two rak'ahs of sunnah prayers before leading them in their obligatory morning prayers. This hadith shows us that even though we may make mistakes or forget to do something important like our daily prayers, we should not give up on it but instead try our best to make it up as soon as possible. It also teaches us that no matter how busy or tired we are, we should always prioritize our religious obligations over other activities and never neglect them.
