The Significance of Washing on Fridays

SUMMARY: Washing oneself and one's head on Friday is a sign of piety.

Aws al-Thaqafi reported the Messenger of Allah as saying: If anyone washes his head on Friday and washes himself; and he narrated the rest of the tradition as above.
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي هِلاَلٍ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ نُسَىٍّ، عَنْ أَوْسٍ الثَّقَفِيِّ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ غَسَلَ رَأْسَهُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَاغْتَسَلَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ سَاقَ نَحْوَهُ

EXPLANATIONS:
On Fridays, Muslims are encouraged to take extra care in their hygiene and cleanliness as a sign of piety. This hadith was narrated by Aws al-Thaqafi, who reported that the Messenger of Allah said that if anyone washes his head and body on Fridays, it is a sign of piety. This means that taking extra care in one's hygiene and cleanliness is an act which pleases Allah. It also serves as an example for others to follow, as it shows how important it is to be mindful about our physical appearance when worshipping Allah. Furthermore, this hadith teaches us the importance of being mindful about our spiritual health too; by taking time out from our busy lives to focus on worshipping Allah we can ensure that we are spiritually healthy too.
