Sunan Abi Dawud 155 (Book 1, Hadith 155) #20446
Wearing Socks During Ablution

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was gifted two black and simple socks, which he put on and then performed ablution while wearing them.

Narrated AbuMusa al-Ash'ari: Negus presented to the Messenger of Allah two black and simple socks. He put them on; then he performed ablution and wiped over them. Musaddad reported this tradition from Dulham b. Salih. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by the people of Basrah alone.

QUICK LESSONS:
Wear appropriate clothing when performing wudhu/ablutions for prayer.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's practice of wearing socks during ablution. It is narrated by AbuMusa al-Ash'ari that the Negus presented two black and simple socks to the Messenger of Allah, who put them on before performing his ablution. This tradition has been reported only by people from Basrah. The hadith teaches us that it is permissible to wear socks while performing wudu or ablutions for prayer, as long as they are not too tight or thick so as to prevent water from reaching the skin underneath them. It also shows us how generous and kind the Negus was towards the Prophet Muhammad, gifting him with something so simple yet useful in his daily life.
