Sunan Abi Dawud 102 (Book 1, Hadith 102) #20393
Validity of Ablution and Bath

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that ablution or bath is only valid if it is done with the intention of purifying oneself from sexual defilement and for prayer.

Explaining the tradition of the Prophet that the ablution of a person who does not mention the name of Allah is valid, Rabi’ah said: This tradition means that if a person performs ablution and takes a bath but does not have the intention to perform ablution for prayer and purify himself from sexual defilement, his ablution or bath is not valid.

QUICK LESSONS:
Perform ablutions/baths with an intention to purify oneself from sexual defilements and for prayer.
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the tradition of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarding ablution and bath. It states that these acts are only valid when they are done with an intention to purify oneself from sexual defilement and for prayer. Without this intention, the ablution or bath will not be considered valid. This teaches us to always have a purpose in mind when performing any act of worship so that we can reap its full benefits. Additionally, it also reminds us to stay away from any kind of sexual impurity as it is against Islamic teachings.
