Sahih al-Bukhari 2120 (Book 34, Hadith 73) #2036
Naming Oneself After the Prophet

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised people to name themselves after him, but not to use his Kunya (name).

Narrated Anas bin Malik: While the Prophet was in the market, somebody, called, "O Abul-Qasim". The Prophet turned to him. The man said, "I have called to this (ie another man)". The Prophet said, "Name yourselves by my name but not by my Kunya (name)". (In Arabic world it is the custom to call the man as the father of his eldest son, eg Abul-Qasim)

QUICK LESSONS:
Name yourself after the prophet without any additions or modifications.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Anas bin Malik and it talks about how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised people to name themselves after him, but not to use his Kunya. A kunya is a type of nickname that is used in Arabic culture which refers to a person's fatherhood. For example, if someone's eldest son was named Qasim, then they would be called Abul-Qasim which means "the father of Qasim". The Prophet ﷺ was advising people not to use this type of nickname for themselves when naming themselves after him. He wanted them instead just to take on his name as their own without any additions or modifications. This hadith teaches us that we should strive for simplicity and humility when taking on the names of our beloved prophet ﷺ. We should also remember that we are all part of one big family and should treat each other with respect and kindness regardless of our differences in background or culture.
