Oral Hygiene and Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) practiced good oral hygiene by cleaning his mouth with a tooth-stick before praying.

Narrated Hudhaifah: When the Apostle of Allaah (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) got up during the night (to pray), he cleansed his mouth with the tooth-stick.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، وَحُصَيْنٍ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَانَ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ يَشُوصُ فَاهُ بِالسِّوَاكِ

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Hudhaifah tells us that the Prophet Muhammad (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) practiced good oral hygiene before praying. He would use a tooth-stick called a siwak to clean his mouth. This is an important lesson for us to learn as it shows us the importance of cleanliness and taking care of our bodies in order to be able to pray properly. It also teaches us that we should take care of our health and practice good habits in order to be able to perform our religious duties properly.
