Sunan Abi Dawud 53 (Book 1, Hadith 53) #20344
Ten Acts of Fitrah

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the ten acts of fitrah (nature) that a person should do to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: The Messenger of Allah said: Ten are the acts according to fitrah (nature): clipping the moustache, letting the beard grow, using the tooth-stick, cleansing the nose (Al-Istinshaq) with water, cutting the nails, washing the finger joints, plucking the hair under the arm-pits, shaving the pubes, and cleansing one's private parts (after easing or urinating) with water. The narrator said: I have forgotten the tenth, but it may have been rinsing the mouth.

He said that there are ten acts according to fitrah, which is an Arabic term meaning “natural disposition” or “instinct”. These acts include clipping the moustache, letting the beard grow, using a tooth-stick for cleaning teeth, cleansing one's nose with water, cutting nails, washing finger joints, plucking hair under arm-pits, shaving pubes and cleansing private parts after urinating with water. The tenth act may have been rinsing one's mouth with water. All these acts help us maintain good hygiene and keep ourselves clean at all times.
