Sunan Abi Dawud 42 (Book 1, Hadith 42) #20333
Ablution and Urination

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that it is not necessary to perform ablution every time one urinates, as it would become a sunnah.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: The Prophet urinated and Umar was standing behind him with a jug of water. He said: What is this, Umar? He replied: Water for you to perform ablution with. He said: I have not been commanded to perform ablution every time I urinate. If I were to do so, it would become a sunnah.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow only what has been commanded by the prophet .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that we should not make something a sunnah if it has not been commanded by the Prophet. In this case, the Prophet was urinating and Umar was standing behind him with a jug of water for him to perform ablution with. The Prophet asked what this was for and Umar replied that it was for him to perform ablution with. The Prophet then said he had not been commanded to do so every time he urinated, as doing so would make it a sunnah. This teaches us that we should only follow what has been commanded by the Prophet and nothing else. We should also be careful about making something into a sunnah when there is no evidence of its being commanded by the Prophet in order to avoid confusion or misinterpretation of Islamic teachings.
