Sunan an-Nasai 5710 (Book 51, Hadith 172) #20243
Staying Away From Doubtful Matters

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of avoiding doubtful matters and staying away from what Allah has forbidden.

It was narrated that An-Nu'man bin Bashir said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah SAW say: 'That which is lawful is clear and that which is unlawful is clear, but between them there are matters which are doubtful'." And sometimes he said: "But between them are matters that are not as clear. I will describe the likeness of that for you. Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has a sanctuary and the sanctuary of Allah is that which He has forbidden. Whoever grazes around the sanctuary will soon transgress into the sanctuary. And whoever approaches a matter that is unclear, he will soon wind up in the sanctuary". And sometimes he said: "He will soon transgress, and indeed whoever mixes in doubt, he will soon cross into it".

It is narrated by An-Nu'man bin Bashir that he heard the Messenger of Allah [SAW] say that it is clear what is lawful and unlawful but between them there are matters which are doubtful. To explain this further, he said that it's like a sanctuary where one should not graze around or approach as they will soon transgress into it. He also said that whoever mixes in doubt will soon cross into it. This hadith teaches us to stay away from anything which we are unsure about as it can lead us to do something wrong or unlawful according to Islam. We should always be sure before doing something so we don't end up crossing into something prohibited by Allah SWT.
