The Permissibility of Large Water Skins

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) forbade the use of large water skins that can no longer be closed, but when the Ansar complained about not having any vessels, he allowed them to use them.

It was narrated from Jabir that : When the Messenger of Allah SAW forbade large water skins that are cut from the top and can no longer be closed, Ansar complained and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we do not have any vessels". The Prophet SAW said: "Then there is no harm".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the permissibility of using large water skins that are cut from the top and can no longer be closed. It was narrated by Jabir that when the Messenger of Allah [SAW] forbade these types of water skins, some members from a group called 'Ansar' complained and said they did not have any other vessels to store their water in. In response, Prophet Muhammad [SAW] said "Then there is no harm" meaning it was permissible for them to use these large water skins even though they could not be closed anymore. This hadith teaches us that if we are in need or difficulty then we should ask for help and our needs will be taken care off by Allah SWT. We should also remember to always seek permission before doing something as it may have been forbidden for a reason.
