Making Nabidh in Water-Skins

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) forbade the delegation of 'Abdul-Qais from drinking water from large water-skins that are cut from the top and can no longer be closed, and instead advised them to make Nabidh in their water-skins, close them and drink it sweet.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "The Messenger of Allah SAW forbade the delegation of 'Abdul-Qais, when they came to him, Ad-Dubba', An-Naqir, Al-Muzaffat, and large water-skins that are cut from the top and can no longer be closed. He said: 'Make Nabidh in your water-skins, and close them and drink it sweet'. One of them said: 'O Messenger of Allah, give me permission concerning something like this. He said: 'If you make it like this,' and he gestured with his hand, showing him how".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's advice to a delegation of 'Abdul Qais when they came to him. He forbade them from drinking water from large water skins that were cut open at the top and could not be closed anymore. Instead, he advised them to make Nabidh in their waterskins, close it up and drink it sweetly. Nabidh is a type of beverage made by soaking dates or raisins in cold or lukewarm water for several hours before consuming it as a refreshing drink. This hadith teaches us about moderation when consuming drinks as well as being mindful of our environment by not wasting resources such as food or drinks unnecessarily. It also shows us how considerate the Prophet was towards his companions by giving practical advice on how they can enjoy their drinks without wasting resources or overindulging themselves with too much sugar or alcohol content which can lead to health problems if consumed excessively. Furthermore, this hadith also serves as an example for us on how we should treat our guests with kindness and respect while providing useful advice that will benefit both parties involved in any situation.
