Seeking Refuge in Allah

SUMMARY: Seeking refuge in Allah from laziness, old age, cowardice, incapacity and the trials of life and death.

It was narrated from 'Uthman bin Abi Al-'As that: The Prophet SAW used to say supplication in these words: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali, walharami, wal-jubni, wal-'ajzi, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat. (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, old age, cowardice, and incapacity, and from the trials of life and death)"
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ، عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي الْعَاصِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ كَانَ يَدْعُو بِهَذِهِ الدَّعَوَاتِ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْعَجْزِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by 'Uthman bin Abi Al-'As speaks about seeking refuge in Allah from various things. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) used to say a supplication which included seeking refuge from laziness, old age, cowardice, incapacity and the trials of life and death. This supplication is a reminder for us to always seek help from Allah when we are faced with difficult situations or feel overwhelmed by our circumstances. It is also an encouragement for us to remain steadfast in our faith even when times are tough as we know that Allah will always be there for us if we turn to Him. Furthermore, this hadith teaches us that it is important to take care of ourselves physically and mentally so that we can remain strong throughout our lives.
