The Prophet's Advice on Wearing Khaluq

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) advised Ya'la bin Murrah Ath-Thaqafi to not wear a little dab of Khaluq and to wash it off if he had already put it on.

It was narrated that Ya'la bin Murrah Ath-Thaqafi said: "The Messenger of Allah SAW saw me wearing a little dab of Khaluq. He said: 'O Ya'la, do you have a wife?' I said: 'No'. He said: 'Wash it off and do not put it on again, then wash it off and do not put it on again, then wash it off and do not put it on again'. I said: 'So I washed it off, and did not put it on again, then I washed it off and did not put it on again, then I washed it off, and did not put it on again".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow advice given by elders/religious leaders , Dress modestly .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, gave advice to Ya’la bin Murrah Ath-Thaqafi about wearing a type of perfume called ‘Khaluq’. He asked him if he had a wife and when he said no, the Prophet advised him to wash off the perfume and not put it on again. This shows us that even though perfumes are allowed in Islam, they should only be used by married people as an expression of love for their spouse. It also teaches us that we should always follow the advice given by our elders or religious leaders as they have more knowledge than us and can guide us in the right direction. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us about modesty; we should dress modestly so that others do not get distracted from their worship or other important tasks due to our clothing choices.
