Prohibited Actions According to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) forbade certain actions such as filing teeth, tattoos, plucking hair, and more.

It was narrated from Abu Al-Husain Al-Haitham bin Shufayy that he said: "A friend of mine who was called Abu 'Amir, from Al-Ma'afir, and I went out to pray in Jerusalem. Their preacher was a man from (the tribe of) Azd who was called Abu Raihanah, one of the Companions". Abu Al-Husain said: "My companion reached the Masjid before I did, then I caught up with him, and sat beside him. He said: 'Have you heard the preaching of Abu Raihanah?' I said: 'No'. He said: 'I heard him say: 'The Messenger of Allah SAW forbade ten things: Filing (the teeth), tattoos, plucking (hair), for two men to lie under one cover with no barrier between them, for two women to lie under one cover with no barrier between them, for a man to add more than four fingers' width of silk to the bottom of his garment like the foreigners (Persians), (and he forbade) plundering, riding (while sitting on) leopard skins and wearing rings- except for rulers".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibitions that were taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He forbade certain actions such as filing teeth, tattoos, plucking hair and more. These prohibitions are meant to protect people from harm and keep them away from things that are not pleasing to Allah SWT. Filing teeth is a form of body modification which can be dangerous if done incorrectly or with unclean tools. Tattoos are also considered haram because they involve permanently marking one’s skin with ink which is not pleasing to Allah SWT. Plucking hair can also be dangerous if done incorrectly or with unclean tools and it goes against Islamic teachings of modesty for women in particular. Other prohibited activities include two men lying under one cover without a barrier between them, two women lying under one cover without a barrier between them, adding more than four fingers’ width of silk to the bottom of garments like foreigners do, plundering or stealing other people’s property, riding on leopard skins and wearing rings except for rulers who have authority over others in society. All these prohibitions were taught by the Prophet ﷺ in order to protect people from harm and keep them away from things that are displeasing to Allah SWT so that they may live their lives according to His teachings instead of following their own desires or whimsical ideas which could lead them astray into sinning against Him SWT .
