Dyeing Hair and Beard According to the Sunnah

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) advised Abu Quhafah to dye his hair and beard, but not with black.

It was narrated that Jabir said: "Abu Quhafah was brought on the Day of the Conquest of Makkah, and his hair and beard were white like the Thaghama. The Messenger of Allah SAW said: 'Change this with something, but avoid black'."
أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ أُتِيَ بِأَبِي قُحَافَةَ يَوْمَ فَتْحِ مَكَّةَ وَرَأْسُهُ وَلِحْيَتُهُ كَالثَّغَامَةِ بَيَاضًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ غَيِّرُوا هَذَا بِشَىْءٍ وَاجْتَنِبُوا السَّوَادَ

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Jabir tells us that when the Prophet Muhammad saw Abu Quhafah on the day of the conquest of Makkah, he noticed that his hair and beard were white like Thaghama. He then advised him to change this with something other than black. This hadith teaches us about following the sunnah in our daily lives, specifically in regards to dyeing our hair and beard. It is important for Muslims to follow what is prescribed in Islam as it brings us closer to Allah SWT. We should strive to follow all aspects of Islamic teachings so that we can be rewarded both in this life and hereafter.
