The Prohibition of Al-Irfah

SUMMARY: The Prophet of Allah forbade his companions from combing their hair every day.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Shaqiq said: "One of the Companions of the Prophet SAW was a governor in Egypt, and one of his companions came to him and found him with unkempt, wild hair. He said: 'How come I see you with wild hair when you are a governor?' He said: 'The Prophet of Allah SAW forbade us from Al-Irfah,' and we said: 'What is Al-Irfah?' He said: 'To comb your hair every day'."

Follow in the footsteps of Muhammad , Focus on spiritual wellbeing over physical appearance

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of Al-Irfah, which is the act of combing one's hair every day. It was narrated by Abdullah bin Shaqiq that one of the Companions of the Prophet was a governor in Egypt and when his companion saw him with unkempt, wild hair he asked why he wasn't taking care to groom himself as a governor should. The Companion replied that it was because the Prophet had forbidden them from Al-Irfah. When they asked what this meant, he explained that it meant not to comb their hair every day. This hadith teaches us that we should not be overly concerned with our physical appearance and instead focus on more important matters such as our spiritual wellbeing and character development. We should also strive to follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad by following his teachings and example in all aspects of life.
