Sahih al-Bukhari 2036 (Book 33, Hadith 11) #1953
The Night Of Qadr And Its Significance

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) informing his followers of the Night of Qadr and how he was informed of it in a dream. He then instructed them to look for it in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan, and when they returned to the mosque, there was a sudden rain which allowed him to prostrate in mud and water.

Narrated Abu Salama bin 'Abdur-Rahman: I asked Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, "Did you hear Allah's Messenger talking about the Night of Qadr?" He replied in the affirmative and said, "Once we were in I'tikaf with Allah's Messenger in the middle ten days of (Ramadan) and we came out of it in the morning of the twentieth, and Allah's Messenger delivered a sermon on the 20th (of Ramadan) and said, 'I was informed (of the date) of the Night of Qadr (in my dream) but had forgotten it. So, look for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. I saw myself prostrating in mud and water on that night (as a sign of the Night of Qadr). So, whoever had been in I'tikaf with Allah's Messenger should return for it'. The people returned to the mosque (for I'tikaf). There was no trace of clouds in the sky. But all of a sudden a cloud came and it rained. Then the prayer was established (they stood for the prayer) and Allah's Messenger prostrated in mud and water and I saw mud over the forehead and the nose of the Prophet.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Prophet Muhammad's instructions regarding Laylatul Qadr, which is one of the holiest nights in Islam that occurs during Ramadan. On this night, Muslims are encouraged to spend their time praying and seeking forgiveness from Allah. In this hadith, Prophet Muhammad informs his followers that he was informed about Laylatul Qadr through a dream but forgot its date. He then instructs them to look for it on odd nights during the last ten days of Ramadan and returns with them for I'tikaf at nightfall. When they return to the mosque, there were no clouds but suddenly a cloud appears and rains down on them allowing him to prostrate in mud and water as a sign that this night is indeed Laylatul Qadr. This hadith teaches us that we should always be prepared for unexpected blessings from Allah even if we don’t expect or plan for it because He knows what’s best for us even if we don’t know ourselves!
