Punishment for Theft

SUMMARY: Theft should not be punished with amputation unless the stolen item is of a certain value.

It was narrated that Ayman said: "The (hand of) a thief is not to be cut off for less than the price of a shield". (Daif Mawquf)

QUICK LESSONS:
Consider each case individually before deciding on an appropriate punishment. Be merciful and understanding when it comes to punishing people for their wrongdoings.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the punishment for theft. It states that a thief's hand should not be cut off unless the stolen item is worth at least the price of a shield. This means that if someone steals something of lesser value, they will not receive such a harsh punishment as amputation. Instead, they may receive another form of punishment such as fines or jail time. The hadith also teaches us to be merciful and understanding when it comes to punishing people for their wrongdoings, and to consider each case individually before deciding on an appropriate punishment.
