Punishment for Theft

SUMMARY: Stealing is a punishable offence and the punishment for stealing an amount of one-quarter of a Dinar or more is to cut off the hand of the thief.

It was narrated from 'Aishah that she heard the Messenger of Allah say: "The hand of a thief is not to be cut off except for one-quarter of a Dinar or more".
أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ السَّرْحِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي مَخْرَمَةُ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ لاَ تُقْطَعُ يَدُ السَّارِقِ إِلاَّ فِي رُبُعِ دِينَارٍ فَصَاعِدًا

This hadith explains that stealing is a punishable offence and that if someone steals an amount of one-quarter of a Dinar or more, then their hand should be cut off as punishment.
