Punishment for Theft

SUMMARY: Theft is a punishable crime and the hand of the thief should be cut off if they steal an amount of one-quarter of a Dinar or more.

It was narrated from 'Amrah that she heard 'Aishah say: "The hand of the thief is to be cut off for one-quarter of a Dinar or more". (Sahih) Abu 'Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasai) said: This is the correct version of the narration of Yahya.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that theft is a punishable crime and that the hand of the thief should be cut off if they steal an amount of one-quarter of a Dinar or more. A Dinar was an ancient coinage used in Arabia during Prophet Muhammad's time. The punishment for stealing this amount was to have their hands cut off as it was considered to be a serious offence in those days. This hadith also shows us how important it is to follow laws and regulations set by society as it helps maintain order and peace within communities. It also teaches us that we must respect other people's property and not take what does not belong to us without permission from its rightful owner.
