Punishment for Theft in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) cut off the hand of a thief for stealing a shield worth five Durhams.

'Abdullah bin 'Amr said: "The Messenger of Allah cut off (a thief's hand) for a shield which was worth five Durham's". This is how he (the narrator) said it. (Daif)
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَخْلَدٌ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَنْظَلَةُ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ نَافِعًا، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ، يَقُولُ قَطَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فِي مِجَنٍّ قِيمَتُهُ خَمْسَةُ دَرَاهِمَ ‏.‏ كَذَا قَالَ

EXPLANATIONS:
According to the hadith, Prophet Muhammad PBUH cut off the hand of a thief who stole a shield worth five dirhams. This punishment is known as Iqab and it is prescribed by Allah SWT in order to deter people from committing theft and other crimes. It serves as an example that Allah SWT does not tolerate any kind of crime or injustice and He has set laws that must be followed by all Muslims. This hadith also teaches us that we should always be honest and truthful in our dealings with others, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. We should also strive to protect our belongings from being stolen or taken away without permission, as this can lead to serious consequences if caught.
