Sunan an-Nasai 4897 (Book 46, Hadith 28) #19430
Justice and Equality for All

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of justice and equality, regardless of social status.

It was narrated from 'Aishah that: a woman stole at the time of Messenger of Allah and they said: "We cannot speak to him concerning her; there is no one who can speak to him except his beloved, Usamah". So he spoke to him, and he said"O Usamah, the Children of Israel were destroyed for such a thing. Whenever a noble person among them stole, they would let him go, but if a low-class person among them stole, they would cut off his hand. If it were Fatimah bint Muhammad (who stole), I would cut off her hand".

QUICK LESSONS:
Apply justice equally regardless of social status or class; hold everyone accountable for their actions; treat everyone fairly and with respect.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of justice and equality in society. It was narrated by Aishah that a woman stole at the time of Prophet Muhammad, but no one could speak to him about it except his beloved Usamah. Prophet Muhammad then said that if it were Fatimah bint Muhammad who stole, he would have cut off her hand as punishment according to Qisas - an Islamic law which states that a criminal must be punished in kind for their crime. This hadith teaches us that justice should be applied equally regardless of social status or class; no one should be given preferential treatment because they are wealthy or powerful. Everyone should be held accountable for their actions and receive equal punishment when they break the law.
