Forgiveness vs Punishment

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ordered the cutting off of a thief's hand for stealing, but when the victim offered to forgive him and sell it on credit, the Prophet asked why he did not say this before.

It was knarrated that Safwan bin Umayyah said: "I was sleeping in the Masjid on a Khmaishah of mine that was worth thirty Dirhams, and a man came and stole it from me. The man was caught and taken to the Prophet, who ordered that his hand be cut off. I came to him and said: "Will you cut off his hand for the sake of only thirty Dirhams? I will sell it to him on credit". He said:" Why did you not say this before you brought him to me?"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man who was caught stealing from Safwan bin Umayyah in the masjid. When taken to the Prophet Muhammad, he ordered that his hand be cut off as punishment for theft. However, when Safwan offered to forgive him and sell it on credit instead of taking back his money, the Prophet asked why he did not say this before bringing him there. This hadith teaches us that forgiveness is always better than punishment and that we should think twice before taking any action against someone else. It also shows us how merciful and compassionate our beloved prophet was towards others even in difficult situations like this one.
