Compensation for Mukatab

SUMMARY: The Prophet of Allah ruled that the Diyah (compensation) for a Mukatab (a slave who has paid off part of his freedom price) should be equivalent to the Diyah for a free man, proportionate to the amount he had paid off.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that: the Prophet of Allah ruled that the Diyah for a Mukatab should be (equivalent) to the Diyah for a free man, proportionate to the amount he had paid off (toward buying his freedom).

QUICK LESSONS:
Make efforts towards freeing slaves; Treat those less privileged with justice and fairness; Pay due respect towards those less fortunate than you; Follow Islamic teachings on slavery

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how much compensation should be given to a slave who has paid off part of his freedom price. The Prophet Muhammad ruled that the compensation or diyah should be equivalent to what would have been given if they were free, and it should be proportionate to the amount they have already paid towards their freedom. This means that if someone has already paid half their freedom price, then they will only need to pay half of what would normally be required as compensation. This ruling shows us how important it is in Islam for people who are not free, such as slaves, to gain their freedom and how much effort was made by Muhammad and other Muslims at that time in order for this goal to become reality. It also teaches us about justice and fairness when dealing with those who are not as privileged as others in society.
