Sunan an-Nasai 4775 (Book 45, Hadith 70) #19308
Respect for the Dead and Living

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) warned against slandering and defaming the dead or offending the living.

Ibn 'Abbad narrated that: a man slandered one of his forefathers from the time of the Jahiliyyah, and Al-'Abbas slapped him. His people came and said: "Let him slap him as he slapped him," and they prepared for quarrel. News of that reached the Prophet, and he ascended the Minbar and said: "O People, which of the people of the Earth do you know to be the most noble before Allah?" They said: "You". He said: "Al-Abbas belongs to me and I to him. Do not defame our dead or offend our living". Those people came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we seek refuge with Allah from your anger; pray to give us".

QUICK LESSONS:
Speak kindly about others , Be forgiving , Show respect

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about respecting both the dead and living. It was narrated by Ibn 'Abbad that a man slandered one of his forefathers from the time of Jahiliyyah, which is a period before Islam. Al-'Abbas slapped him in response to this slanderous act. His people then wanted to retaliate but news of this reached Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He then ascended the Minbar and asked who they thought was most noble before Allah? They replied that it was him. He then said that Al-'Abbas belonged to him and he belonged to Al-'Abbas; thus warning them not to defame their dead or offend their living. Those people came back asking for forgiveness from his anger so he prayed for them instead. This hadith teaches us that we should respect both our dead ancestors as well as our living family members by not speaking ill of either one of them or engaging in any kind of offensive behavior towards them. We should also be forgiving when someone wrongs us instead of retaliating with violence or harsh words as Prophet Muhammad did in this situation by praying for those people instead of getting angry at them.
