Sunan an-Nasai 4733 (Book 45, Hadith 28) #19266
Doing What is Right and Just

SUMMARY: This hadith explains how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked to judge between two tribes, An-Nadir and Qurayza, regarding a matter of blood money. He then revealed a verse from the Quran which instructed them to do what is right and just.

It was narrated from Dawud hin Al-Husain, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, that the Verses in AL-Ma'idah, in which Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, says: "Either judge between them, or turn away from them. If you turn away from then up to: those who act justly".1 - were revealed concerning the matter of blood money between An-Nadir and Qurayza. That was because the slain of An-Nadir were of noble status, so the blood money would be paid in full for them, but for Banu Qurayza only half of the blood money would be paid. They referred the matter to the Messenger of Allah for judgment, then Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, revealed that concerning them, so the Messenger of Allah told them to do the right thing and he made the blood money equal.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about justice and righteousness in terms of blood money between two tribes - An-Nadir and Qurayza. The Prophet Muhammad was asked to judge between them as they were unable to come to an agreement on their own. Allah then revealed a verse from the Quran instructing them to do what is right and just. The Messenger of Allah then made sure that both sides received equal amounts of blood money for their slain members regardless of their status or tribe. This hadith teaches us that justice should be given equally regardless of one's social standing or background; everyone should be treated fairly according to Islamic teachings. It also shows us how important it is for us as Muslims to seek out justice when we are wronged instead of taking matters into our own hands without consulting with those who are knowledgeable in Islamic law first.
