Fasting on the Day of 'Ashura'

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered a man to announce that whoever had eaten should fast the rest of the day, and whoever had not eaten should continue their fast on the day of 'Ashura'.

Narrated Salama bin Al-Akwa': The Prophet ordered a man from the tribe of Bani Aslam to announce amongst the people that whoever had eaten should fast the rest of the day, and whoever had not eaten should continue his fast, as that day was the day of 'Ashura' .
حَدَّثَنَا الْمَكِّيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ أَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ رَجُلاً مِنْ أَسْلَمَ أَنْ أَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ ‏ "‏ أَنَّ مَنْ كَانَ أَكَلَ فَلْيَصُمْ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَكَلَ فَلْيَصُمْ، فَإِنَّ الْيَوْمَ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ordered a man from the tribe of Bani Aslam to make an announcement amongst people that those who had already eaten should fast for the rest of that day and those who hadn't yet eaten should continue fasting. This was done because it was the day of 'Ashura', which is a special day in Islamic history. It is believed that fasting on this particular day brings many blessings and rewards from Allah SWT. It is also believed to be one way to show gratitude towards Allah SWT for all His blessings. This Hadith teaches us about being mindful and grateful towards Allah SWT by observing certain religious practices such as fasting on special days like 'Ashura'.
