Sahih al-Bukhari 2002 (Book 30, Hadith 107) #1920
Fasting on Ashura in Pre-Islamic and Islamic Periods

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to fast on the day of Ashura in the Pre-Islamic period, and when he came to Medina, he continued fasting on that day. Later when the fasting of Ramadan was prescribed, it became optional for one to fast on Ashura or not.

Narrated Aisha: Quraish used to fast on the day of 'Ashura' in the Pre-Islamic period, and Allah's Messenger too, used to fast on that day. When he came to Medina, he fasted on that day and ordered others to fast, too. Later when the fasting of the month of Ramadan was prescribed, he gave up fasting on the day of 'Ashura' and it became optional for one to fast on it or not.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad PBUH , Obey Allah's commands and prohibitions .

EXPLANATIONS:
In the pre-islamic period, Quraish used to fast on the day of 'Ashurah'. When Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) migrated from Makkah to Madinah, he continued fasting on this day as well. Later when Allah revealed that Muslims should fast during Ramadan every year, it became optional for them whether they want to keep fasting on 'Ashurah or not. This hadith teaches us that we should follow what our beloved Prophet did and try our best to practice his Sunnah even if it is not compulsory anymore. We should also remember that Allah has given us a great blessing by prescribing us with a month full of blessings - Ramadan - where we can get closer to Him through worshiping Him more than usual days.
