Sunan an-Nasai 4656 (Book 44, Hadith 208) #19189
The Priority of Allah's Decree and Loyalty to Slave Owners

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of freeing slaves and that loyalty belongs to the one who sets them free.

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: "Barirah came to me and said: 'O Aishah, I have drawn up a contract of manumission with my master, (to buy my freedom) in return for nine Uqiyah, one Uqiyah to be paid each year; help me,' she had not yet paid anything toward her contract of manumission'. 'Aishah, who liked her and wanted to help her, said: 'Go back to your masters and if they agree to let me pay the whole sum and that your loyalty will be to me, I will do it'. So Barirah went to her masters and suggested that to them, but they refused and said: 'if she wants to seek reward (with Allah) by freeing you, let her do so, but (you loyalty) will be to us, 'Aishah told the Messenger of Allah about that and he said: 'Do not let that stop you. Buy her and set her free, and loyalty belongs to the one who sets the slave free.; so she did that, then the Messenger of Allah stood up before the people, praised and glorified Allah, then said: 'What is the matter with people who stipulate conditions that are not in the Book of Allah? Whoever stipulates conditions that are not in even if there are a hundred conditions? The decree of Allah takes priority, and the conditions of Allah binding. And loyalty belongs to the one who sets the slaves free'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the importance of freeing slaves and that loyalty belongs to the one who sets them free. It was narrated by 'Aishah that Barirah came to her asking for help in buying her freedom from her masters in return for nine Uqiyahs. 'Aishah wanted to help Barirah so she offered to pay all nine Uqiyahs at once but her masters refused and said that if she wanted reward with Allah then let her do so but Barirahs loyalty would remain with them. When Aishah told this story to Prophet Muhammad he said not to let it stop her from buying Barirahs freedom and setting her free as loyalty belongs with the one who sets a slave free. Prophet Muhammad then stood up before people praising Allah and saying whoever stipulates conditions not found in Quran should be aware that Allah's decree takes priority over any other condition or contract made between two parties. This hadith teaches us about how important it is for us as Muslims to set slaves free if we can afford it as well as teaching us about how important it is for us not make contracts or conditions which are not found in Quran because they will be overruled by Allah's decree anyway.
