Measuring Volume and Weight According to Local Systems

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) instructed that volume should be measured according to the system of the people of Al-Madinah and weight should be measured according to the system of the people of Makkah.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah said: "Volume is to be measured according to the system of the people of Al-Madinah, and weight is to be measured according to the system of the people of Makkah"'. (Sahih) This is the wording of Ishaq (one of the narrators).

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow local customs & traditions when it comes to measurement systems.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how we measure things. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us that when measuring volume or capacity we should use the system used by people in Al-Madinah and when measuring weight we should use the system used by people in Makkah. This teaches us that it is important to follow local customs and traditions when it comes to measurement systems as this will ensure accuracy and fairness in transactions. It also teaches us that different places may have different ways of doing things but they are all valid if they are accepted by those who live there.
