Sunan an-Nasai 4565 (Book 44, Hadith 117) #19098
Equal Transactions to Avoid Riba

SUMMARY: Transactions should be equal in amount and type, and any additional payment or taking of more than the agreed amount is considered Riba.

It was narrated from Sulaiman bin Ali: "Abu Al-Mutawakkil passed by them in the market and some people, including me, stood up to greet him. We said: 'We have come to you to ask you about transactions'. He said: 'I heard a man say to Abu Saeed Al-Khudri': 'Is there anyone between you and the Messenger of Allah (in the chain of narrators) apart from Abu Saeed Al-Khudri? He said: 'There is no one else between him and I. He said: Gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates, salt for salt, equal amounts. Whoever gives more than that or takes more has engaged in Riba, and the taker and the giver are the same"'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance of conducting transactions with fairness and justice. It was narrated by Sulaiman bin Ali that Abu Al-Mutawakkil passed by them in the market and some people, including him, stood up to greet him. They asked him about transactions and he told them what he heard from a man who asked Abu Saeed Al-Khudri about it. The man said that gold should be exchanged for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates and salt for salt in equal amounts only. Any additional payment or taking of more than the agreed amount is considered as usury or riba which is forbidden according to Islamic teachings. This hadith teaches us that we must conduct our transactions with fairness and justice so as not to engage in riba which can have serious consequences on both parties involved.
