Avoiding Unjust Transactions

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised against certain behaviors such as selling for a desert-dweller, outbidding one's brother, and asking for a sister in faith to be divorced.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: "No tow-dweller should sell for desert-dweller, no man should outbid his brother; and no woman should ask for her sister (in faith) to be divorced so as to turn over what is in her bowl (deprive her of her share of maintenance)"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about avoiding unjust transactions and behavior. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised against certain behaviors such as selling for a desert-dweller, outbidding one's brother, and asking for a sister in faith to be divorced. Selling to someone from the desert was seen as an unfair transaction because they were not familiar with the market prices of goods and could easily be taken advantage of. Similarly, outbidding one's brother was seen as an act of injustice because it would lead to envy between them which is forbidden in Islam. Lastly, asking for a sister in faith to be divorced so that her share of maintenance can be taken away from her was also seen as an act of injustice since it deprives her of what she deserves according to Islamic law. All these acts are considered unjust transactions or behavior according to Islamic teachings and should therefore be avoided at all costs by Muslims who wish to live their lives according to the teachings of Islam.
