Prohibiting Fasting on Fridays

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade fasting on Fridays, unless one intends to fast only that day.

Narrated Muhammad bin 'Abbas: I asked Jabir "Did the Prophet forbid fasting on Fridays?" He replied, "Yes". (Other narrators added, "If he intends to fast only that day")
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبَّادٍ، قَالَ سَأَلْتُ جَابِرًا ـ رضى الله عنه ـ نَهَى النَّبِيُّ عَنْ صَوْمِ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ قَالَ نَعَمْ‏.‏ زَادَ غَيْرُ أَبِي عَاصِمٍ أَنْ يَنْفَرِدَ بِصَوْمٍ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of fasting on Fridays, unless one has the intention to fast only that day. It was narrated by Muhammad bin 'Abbas and Jabir who were companions of the Prophet ﷺ. This hadith teaches us that we should not make a habit of fasting every Friday, but if we do intend to fast only that day then it is permissible. We should also be mindful of our intentions when performing any act of worship as this is an important part of our faith in Islam. Additionally, this hadith reminds us to be mindful and conscious when making decisions in life as even small decisions can have a big impact on our lives.
